Josh Ransom

email: josh.ransom@prepclasses.org

Let me introduce myself. My name is Josh Ransom and I am the Elementary, Junior High,  and High School Art teacher at Prep Classes. I am so grateful that I have the privilege to  teach such an amazing subject!

I have taught art and music in a variety of school settings (charter, public, private,  international, and on my Art Bus) for 20 years. Over those 20 years I have had the privilege  to inspire, motivate, encourage, challenge, and develop thousands of students ranging from  4 years old to adults. Some of the classes I have taught are Elementary Art, Middle School  Art, High School Art (Drawing 1, Drawing 2, Sculpture, Pottery & Ceramics), and Adult art  classes. I am motivated by being around people and I have a passion for expression and  communication through art. I hold degrees in Art Education and Music Education. While  there were many things I enjoyed about teaching in a traditional school setting, I thoroughly  enjoy working with smaller, more focused groups to share my knowledge, skills, and love of  art. The past 9 years I have taught in smaller settings, for which is a major reason I decided to teach Art at PREP.

I still can’t believe I married such a wonderful woman and am a father to 6 amazing kids!  Our family’s journey has taken us to a variety of places: Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi,  Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. We have lived in two international communities and  are so grateful for our friends in every continent (except Antarctica!). You’ll have to ask me about our overseas experiences, maybe over a cup of coffee!

It is my aim to teach them skills and techniques and provide them with a variety of hands-on experiences in a supportive and caring atmosphere. I have so much to give and share with  my students. If you choose to enroll your child in Art, I do realize this is a big decision, because you are entrusting me with part of their education journey. It would be my joy to  partner with you.

Teacher's Classes

In the Elementary Art program, students will explore creativity, self-expression, art processes and mediums.  Students will engage in creative problem-solving and critical thinking.  They will be challenged to express their ideas visually.  Heavy emphasis will be placed on the artistic processes and techniques through various mediums.

The curriculum aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Hands-On Creation:  Through hands-on activities, students will experiment with different art materials, such as paints, pastels, clay, as well as other 3-D materials. They’ll create their own artworks, developing skills in drawing, painting, and mixed media.  Process and effort will be mainly emphasized.
  2. Appreciation of God’s Creation: Students will explore the beauty of God’s creation and learn to see the world through an artistic lens.
  3. Critical Thinking and Creativity:  Students engage in creative problem-solving, learn to think outside the box, and express their ideas visually.
  4. Art Appreciation: Students will learn to appreciate various forms of art, including paintings, sculptures, and other types of art. They’ll briefly explore different artistic styles and techniques.
  5. Art History: Students will briefly be introduced to other artists (present and future), art movements, and historical contexts.  A very small amount of time will be given to Art Appreciation and Art History for the Elementary grades.
  6. Discovery, Exploration, Observation, Thinking, Creating, Rigor, Fun!:  These are not just words.  It is my aim to guide students to discover, explore, think deeply, observe, create, and to work hard.  It is my hope that these God-given abilities will be strengthened in a loving, caring, structured, fun, and supportive environment where the students are not afraid to take risks and ask questions.

In the High School Art program, students will grow in creativity and self-expression and will also be exposed to a variety of art processes and mediums.  This course is designed to be rigorous, engaging, and relevant.  Students will be challenged to think critically and creatively about their art.  Heavy emphasis will be placed on artistic processes and techniques.  This course will also include discussion about how art is used in the real world.  Discussion times are used to spawn interactive dialogue and to  challenge students to think outside the box.

The curriculum aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Hands-On Creation:  Through hands-on activities, students will experiment with different art materials, such as acrylic paints, watercolors, charcoal, clay, as well as other 3-D materials. They’ll create their own artworks, developing skills in drawing, painting, mixed media, and other techniques.  Process as well as completion will be emphasized.  Attention to detail and fine motor skills will be strengthened and expanded upon throughout the duration of this course.  In the creation of art, individual expression will be given a greater emphasis due to their age level, abilities, and critical thinking skills.
  2. Christian Values: The curriculum will emphasize Christian values.  The classroom culture will be one where students are free to express their faith and reflect on Biblical themes through their art if they so choose.
  3. Appreciation of God’s Creation: Students will explore the beauty of God’s creation and learn to see the world through an artistic lens.
  4. Critical Thinking and Creativity:  Students will engage in creative problem-solving, learning to think outside the box, and expressing their ideas visually.
  5. Art Appreciation: Students will learn to appreciate various forms of art, including paintings, sculptures, and other types of art. They’ll briefly explore varying artistic styles and techniques.
  6. Art History: Little emphasis and time will be given to study the lives and works of other artists.  This is a hands on course that involves lots of studio time.  Most artwork will be done during class time.  When Art History is talked about, it will be presented through a Biblical worldview lense.
  7. Discovery, Exploration, Observation, Thinking, Creating, Rigor, Fun!:  These are not just words.  It is my aim to guide students to discover, explore, think deeply, observe, create, and to work hard.  It is my hope that these God-given abilities would be strengthened in a loving, caring, structured, fun, and supportive environment where students are not afraid to take risks and ask questions.
