Teacher Profile

Paula Cummings

email: paula.cummings@prepclasses.org

Paula Cummings graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from Texas Tech University in 2000.  She taught History and Language Arts in Amarillo public schools for 6 years. During that time, she received training in Balanced Literacy, Advanced Placement Institute, and The New Jersey Writing Project of Texas.

Mrs. Cummings finds joy in helping students grow in confidence through reading and writing. Her goal is to encourage and equip students with the tools needed to flourish in their God given gifts and abilities.

Mrs. Cummings transitioned to stay at home with her children with the birth of her daughter, Claire.  At this same time, she and her husband, Chad, moved to Oklahoma where they were first introduced to the option of home education. Together, they explored this “new to them” concept and were quickly won over by the many benefits. Their love for home education even led them to help other families know these benefits. In 2015 Mrs. Cummings served as the director of Connect Co-Op in Oklahoma City where she also taught a reading and writing workshop. In 2018 she founded and directed The Hub Homeschool Enrichment in Tulsa.

In 2022 the Cummings family moved to Magnolia, TX where they have enjoyed the rich homeschool community.  Cole and Caleb, play football for Tomball Christian Warriors and attend classes at both PREP and Tomball Classes for Homeschoolers.  Claire participates in National Youth Theater, attends Ethos School of Music in The Woodlands, and will graduate this year from Legacy Preparatory Christian Academy.

In their 26 years of marriage, Chad, Mrs. Cummings, and their children have served in multiple churches and ministries with a desire to share the love of Christ with those around them. Currently, they serve at Harbor Church, a new church plant in Magnolia.

Teacher's Classes

Seventh grade is a great time for students to sharpen the skills they have been taught and add some new ones to challenge their active minds. This class is designed to do just that through the four areas of language study:  reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Students will learn a good deal of new vocabulary and analyze literature while delving into discussions of the themes of some excellent novels.  For the fall semester these will include The Secret Garden (Burnett), Number the Stars (Lowry), and My Side of the Mountain (Jean George) *Spring semester novels TBD.

Each week, we review English grammar through various exercises in which students will thoroughly review parts of speech, phrases, and clauses through parsing and diagramming.

Throughout the year, students will also write for five different purposes: journal, expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. Using WriteShop I, students will have the opportunity to learn how to construct various essays.  Students will also learn editing skills. By the end of the year, students will have a written portfolio and have done a few speaking presentations.  Students will receive tips on how to speak to an audience throughout the year.
