In this 7th grade course, students will sharpen organizational skills, practice time management, and begin working more independently.  Parents guide and assist as needed, but students are responsible for their own work.

*Students should expect to spend 4-5 hours a week at home working on RW1 assignments. Suggested schedule: 1 hour at home Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

RW1 is divided into 3 areas of study: Writing, Grammar, and Literature.

RW1 is structured into 6 units over the course of 10 months.

Each unit will be centered on a novel and provide students with weekly assignments for vocabulary and comprehension. In addition, students will practice critical thinking through analysis of theme, setting, character, and literary devices.

Examples of novels covered are The Secret Garden, My Side of the Mountain, Where The Red Fern Grows, and Number the Stars.  *A finalized list of all novels will be available to enrolled students by July 31.

Using Shurley English students will classify sentences using a question-and-answer flow. This provides a thorough review of parts of speech, kinds of sentences and various jobs of each part of speech. Students will also review punctuation and capitalization rules. The last unit of this course introduces diagraming sentences.

Utilizing WriteShop 1, students will write for five different purposes: journal, expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. Students will practice editing skills by completing the writing process for each composition: brainstorm (prewriting), draft (sloppy copy), revision, and final copy.  By the end of the year, students will have a written portfolio and have participated in a few speaking presentations.  Students will receive tips on how to speak to an audience throughout the year.
