Come and explore God's biological creation and learn important skills through the study of life science. This course will examine living things, how they work, and how they relate with all parts of their environment —starting with the fascinating world of cells, to the hierarchy of organisms like bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, animals, and humans. All these concepts are approached with the goal to better understand the living world that God created.
Class format includes a lecture which introduces the chapter concepts and prepares students for the laboratory exercises and periodic testing. This class is also designed to teach and hone skills in the following areas as they get ready for high school and beyond:
*Note taking - students are introduced to different methods of recording important points from the lecture.
*Critical thinking - students learn to analyze and evaluate given information through facilitated class discussions
*Study strategies - students discover how they learn best by reinforcing acquired information in a various ways for greater retention.
*Lab technique - students develop proper practical techniques during microscopy when they study cells, when performing dissections of specimens like earthworms, perch, and shark, and while conducting other lab experiments.
*Research - students go through a guided research paper-writing process on a major biome.
*Public speaking/oral reporting - students have an opportunity to share what they learned about their biome when they give a formal presentation of their paper.
