NOTE:  A student must be at least thirteen years old by September 1, 2024 to register for this class for the 2023-24 school year.

Building on the skills learned in 7^th grade, this class will further develop writing/composition skills and analysis of various works of literature. 

Eighth-grade students will concentrate on deeper discussions from the novels, writing in five different areas, reviewing grammar from past years, editing papers, and presenting written work to their peers.

Students will learn new vocabulary and analyze literature.  For the fall semester these novels include The Hiding Place (Corrie Ten Boom), The Bronze Bow (Speare), and a play The Miracle Worker (Gibson).  *Spring semester novels TBD.

Each week, we will review English grammar through various exercises in which students will thoroughly review parts of speech, phrases, and clauses through parsing and diagramming.

Throughout the year, students will also write for five different purposes: journal, expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. Using WriteShop II, students will have the opportunity to learn how to construct various essays.  Students will also learn editing skills.  By the end of the year, students will have a written portfolio and have done a few speaking presentations.  Students will receive tips on how to speak to an audience throughout the year.

Supply fee: $65

Tuition: $550/year or 10 monthly payments of $55.

Textbooks: WriteShop II Student Workbook

Parents provide all novels and WriteShop Student Workbook for the class

Materials Needed: 1-inch 3-ring binder, notebook paper, 8 dividers, colored pencils, sticky notes (2 packs) and a highlighter.

Class time: 2 hours, once weekly

*Withdrawal fee after 9/30 of that school year is 3 months of tuition.

*The Supply Fee is due upon registration.

**Section A and Section B are the exact same class taught at different times.  Please only register for one of them.
