This course will focus on literature, writing and grammar. We will read some great novels, write some amazing things and learn and review grammar along the way! English 5 is a teacher & parent partnership, and I will need your help to make this year a great success for each student. Parents will be responsible for facilitating grammar homework, along with monitoring reading and writing projects.

Required curriculum, to be purchased by parents for the first day of class.

  1. Easy Grammar, Grade 5 Teacher’s Edition by Wanda Phillips. This will contain the homework for your child, along with grammar explanations for the parent, answer keys and tests.

  1. Structure and Style for Students, Year 1, Level A (Binder and Student Packet*) by The Institute for Excellence in Writing. This will be our main in-class curriculum. Utilizing curriculum from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), students will learn a variety of stylistic techniques as they work through nine structures of writing including: note-taking & outlines, writing from notes, retelling narrative stories, summarizing references, writing from pictures, summarizing multiple references, inventive writing, formal essay models and formal critique. *This should only cost $35. There are more expensive options that include video streaming that are not needed for our class.

  1. Portable Walls by The Institute for Excellence in Writing. “With Portable Walls students can create a writing station right at their desks. This tri-folder is packed with the Unit Models and several word lists, including prepositions, strong verbs, substitutes for said, and more!”

  1. Novels (Please feel free to shop around and/or purchase used copies.)

The Doughnut Fix by Jessie Janowitz
