Seventh grade is a great time for students to sharpen the skills they have been taught and add some new ones to challenge their active minds. This class is designed to do just that through the four areas of language study:  reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Students will learn a good deal of new vocabulary and analyze literature while delving into discussions of the themes of some excellent novels.  These include The Secret Garden (Burnett), Number the Stars (Lowry), The Hatchet (Gary Paulsen), Where the Red Fern Grows (Wilson Rawls), My Side of the Mountain (Jean George), and Island of the Blue Dolphins (Scott O’Dell)

Each week, we review English grammar through various exercises in which students will thoroughly review parts of speech, phrases, and clauses through parsing and diagramming.

Throughout the year, students will also write for five different purposes: journal, expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. Using the Lost Tools of Writing curriculum, students will have the opportunity to learn how to construct a persuasive essay.  By the end of the year, students will have a written portfolio and have done a few speaking presentations.  Students will receive tips on how to speak to an audience throughout the year.
